What is Lean?

Lean

Lean is defined as:

"a systematic approach to identifying and eliminating waste (non-value added activities) through continuous improvement by flowing the product at the pull of the customer in pursuit of perfection."  (Green Suppliers Network, 2009)

and:

"...maximizing customer value while minimizing waste."  (Lean Enterprise Institute, 2008)

The lean principlesare ways of thinking and acting for an entire organization, not a tactic or a cost reduction program. To learn more about how the lean principles were used at ISU, please visit the eMerge department website.
